Birds.
The isolated nature of New
Zealand's three main islands, have made it a fascinating place for
ornithologists. Often referred to as "moa's ark," the almost total absence
of land mammals here meant that birds evolved to fill most of the niches
occupied by mammals, such as large grazers, pollinators and even apex
predators. Sadly, the arrival of humans saw this unique ecosystem disrupted,
and many species have been lost forever. However, many unique species
remain, and these are now joined by around 41 introduced varieties.
